SMK award recognises campaigner tackling institutional abuse in Northern Ireland

Margaret McGuckin, a Belfast-based campaigner for the rights of people who have suffered physical, emotional, mental and sexual abuse in Northern Ireland institutions, has been announced as the 2012 winner of the Sheila McKechnie Foundation’s Social and Economic Justice Award, sponsored by the Barrow Cadbury Trust.

Having co-founded Survivors and Victims of Institutional Abuse (SAVIA), Margaret successfully campaigned for the Northern Ireland Executive to establish an inquiry.

Margaret joined six other winners of Sheila McKechnie Foundation Campaigner Awards at a ceremony hosted by Channel 4 News’ Jon Snow at St Martin-in-the Field on Tuesday 18th September. The Barrow Cadbury Trust congratulates Margaret on her tireless and vital campaigning.
