Criminal defence in an age of austerity: Zealous advocate or cog in a machine?
Most defendants still want to use a lawyer, but there are some indications that trust in defence practitioners may be ebbing away.
This report’s findings are based on a literature review of research, guidance and other key documents relating to the quality of criminal defence services as well as primary qualitative research: interviews with seven criminal defence lawyers, an online survey of 56 magistrates, and three focus groups, and a roundtable discussion.
