Rebuilding Lives: Young Muslims from Criminal Justice System to Community Resettlement
Muslims are overrepresented in the Criminal Justice System. Currently 17% of prisoners identify themselves as Muslim, although Muslims make up 6.5% of the overall population of England and Wales. Once young Muslims enter the criminal justice system, they face discrimination and racism, further exacerbating feelings of alienation and disengagement from society.
The report highlights a range of issues from islamophobia within the criminal justice
system, to the systemic and chronic disadvantage faced by many in the Muslim community, and makes recommendations including staff training programmes that will allow practitioners to better understand Islamic belief and practice, and developing partnerships between probation services and local Muslim-led services and mosques.
