Ending the extra cost of energy prepayment meters

For years people who paid for energy using a prepayment meter (PPM) – using one of those small keys that meant people had to go to a shop to top up – paid more for their energy than direct debit customers.

Before it was changed in 2023, PPM users were paying £52 per year more than direct debit customers.

Fair By Design campaigned to end this unfairness from its inception and, after consistent pressure from Fair By Design and others, the Government announced it would bring prepayment meter energy charges in line with direct debit customers from July 2023. This change was confirmed by Ofgem, the energy regulator, in February  2024.
