Alan Rusbridger, the editor of the Guardian, was the host at the 2013 Sheila McKechnie Foundation (SMK) Campaigner Awards, held at a special ceremony at St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square.
 
The SMK Campaigner Awards recognise the outstanding contribution that individuals are making towards achieving social, environmental and economic justice here in the UK and abroad. SMK is the UK’s only charity dedicated to connecting, informing and supporting campaigners.
 
This year the Barrow Cadbury Trust joined with the housing charity Shelter to sponsor the SMK Social and Economic Justice Award, for emerging campaigners who are taking action to achieve social and economic justice. The award’s winner was Julie Jamieson, from Newtownabbey, who is campaigning for young people with severe learning disabilities in Northern Ireland to have the right to a basic adult education. Julie received her award on stage from the veteran human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell.
